Security Measures are Different for Small Businesses

In the desire to protect homes and large businesses, the needs of small business has been overlooked. These businesses, while not requiring the scale of protection of the larger business models, do have specific and special security measures as opposed to those in the home.

Many leading names in the industry have realized the special needs of small businesses and are trying to plug the gap.  They are designing models of security better suited to the requirements of this segment. Since small businesses do not face as large a problem of employee turnover, their risk is considerably smaller than larger corporations.

Exterior lighting is an important safety and security feature for small businesses. Not only do you want to protect employees that may be leaving after hours but you should also do so for the protection of customers or patrons who may be on the business property after hours. The security measure requirement is to eliminate the dark areas outside the building to prevent intruders from breaking in. In addition, a few lights inside the premises should be left on for police and passerby’s to notice any furtive movement.

The entry and exit points of the building should not be obstructed by an overgrowth of trees and shrubs which provide shielded access for criminals.  Trees should be pruned back from the building to prevent anyone from gaining access to the roof.

Every employee should have special entry code cards which can be easily checked should there be a break-in. This may not always identify the perpetrator, but it can come close to identifying the people on the premises who might reveal very important eye witness information. The right insurance policy can help ensure that you are not personally targeted if someone is injured on your business property.

Get an expert to assess and provide a report and plan on the specific needs of your small business.  After professional review, based on the security budget you had anticipated, decide on a course of action to install a security system best suited to your requirements.
