Why Monitored Security

Are Silent Alarms a Viable Option for Your Property?

There are pros and cons about the effectiveness of silent alarms.  A silent alarm is usually combined with a monitoring service so that it is alerted as soon as an emergency arises. The issue is, the delay that occurs in the response time between the sounding of the alarm and the action being implemented.

When a client contracts with a security company, they have the option of choosing who responds to the alarm - the representatives of the company or the police.  The alarm company representatives are more likely to show up before the police as the latter do not consider intrusions into homes and business places a high priority these days. On the other hand, the security guards being unarmed and mostly unskilled are less likely to be strong deterrents to hardened intruders.

As most companies employ low wage workers whose backgrounds are suspect, clients prefer to have the police respond to the alarm for obvious reasons. There could be a charge involved as many police departments charge after one or two false alarms.  This was implemented to avoid the wasted of officers who should be protecting and serving more viable calls. As a result, many people prefer to risk using security companies over the possibility of owing so much money. The best course of action would be to check the policies of both the security company and the police.

The hardened criminal already has the experience and the knowledge of the time lag between the alarm and the response. He would already have staked out the place and chalked out an escape plan. Therefore, he will be in and out of the premises with the stash before the response team arrives.

Importantly, silent alarms do not attract attention which is something no intruder desires as it leads to identification and possible arrest. Loud alarms attract attention and cause the intruder to lose his nerve as well as distract him.  Neighbors and passerby’s all gather and a neighbor alert is more likely to get a quicker response from the police than a silent alarm. In the case of a false alarm, you can always turn it off.

The use of a silent alarm displays consideration for the neighbors as they would not be rudely disturbed, but it will not act as a deterrent to prevent the very intrusion for which you installed the system.
